The Spy
FROM TRADITION…
Handkerchiefs of land perched on the sunny Valtellina slope, created over the centuries from rock by the skilful art of building dry stone walls.
These small terraces provide the impressive fruit from which the Sassella DOCG and Valtellina Superiore DOCG traditional wines are produced.
...TO INNOVATION
"We collect the legacy of the past, evolving it with wise and innovative cellar choices.
Our philosophy allows the creation of new Rhaetian gems, such as 100% Nebbiolo vinified and aged in wood, 100% Classic Method Nebbiolo and the “Castelàsc” project: a blend of Nebbiolo, Moscato Giallo Trentino and Sauvignon-Blanc in its blank."
The Valtellina
NEBBIOLO OF THE ALPS
Climate and soil, two main elements for making Valtellina, a territory perfectly suited to viticulture. The climate is influenced by the Alpine mountains and the orientation of the valley while the vineyard soil's neutral to sub-acidic pH, mainly sandy texture and shallow depth which often subjects the vines to water stress, give the musts a richness that translates into a high finesse and elegance in the wines.
On these slopes, the short rows arranged in the terraces remain an ancient and functional system and one of the largest terraced mountain areas in Europe.
Luca Pignatelli
ART AND WINE
Luca Pignatelli is one of the most important Italian contemporary artists, his figurative work has been shown in numerous prestigious private and public museums, galleries and contemporary art exhibitions.
For a selection of La Spia wines, Pignatelli has expressed the Valtellina area and its wine in three iconic pictorial designs for the labels. The three subjects of naturalistic inspiration, linked to a mythological, fairy-tale woodland fauna, combined with the wine, provide the perfect union between art, quality and tradition.
