Shelter

Baden, Germany

The Shelter vineyards are located in Kenzingen and Malterdingen, north of the Kaiserstuhl in Germany. Their location enjoys a much cooler microclimate due to the proximity to the Black Forest and the volcanic soils of the Kaiserstuhl give way to limestone and loess resulting in Pinot Noirs with lower alcohol and higher acidity.

Wines

Gesunde Trauben

As members of the sustainable winegrowing association of Germany, Hans-Bert and Silke have a philosophy of gentle vinification. For them, this means healthy grapes from vineyards with lower yields. All the fruit is hand-picked and quickly transferred to the 'shelter'. Once there, the grapes are processed in the most gentle way. "We do without pumps and filters. Our pump is gravity and patience replaces the filter."

Shelter neu

'Shelter' is named after the old Canadian air bunker that Hans-Bert and Silke used to make their first wines and when they moved to their current location they built their own bunker-inspired Shelter to continue the tradition.
